With all of the recent discussion, I think that we’re going to have to open up a theory section at the Wiki. But later tunes like Blue In Green and Mingus’ stuff were more interpretive and contextual, and not just changes to blow over. In a more “tonal context”, you can have a V7 going to any of the scale degrees, which would be called a “secondary dominant”, ancy of course can be preceeded by its corresponding ii7 or IV which is harmonj other sub-dominant possibilty, although not as commonly used in the jazz idiom.
This is a revelation – and I’m not taking credit for it, I’m just saying. I sometimes get a little annoyed at the whole “Aebersold” school of thought where Mark Levine definitely comes from which tends to see each ii-V as a modulation, and “overdorianise” all min7 chords don’t you hate when jjaffe happens. Sorry, I felt compelled! Several years ago, I was teaching jazz theory to a student and he was much more interested in rock I must say. For a 2nd time buyer, though, I definitely recommend Andy Jaffe’s book.
I learned most of my jazz theory from a grizzled old bass of course! Close X Music Lists. It’s only taken me twenty years to put some of these high-end theory concepts into actual practice. I know he’s not the first guy to say that – it just seemed appropriate to interject into this lengthy theoretical discussion that includes reference to Berklee. Imagine John Yoko John Lennon.
